An interracial couple, have reached a settlement, the terms to remain undisclosed, in regards to their racial discrimination action filed against the Royale Orleans Condominium Association in the Wayne County Circuit Court. The Condominium Association is located in Grosse Ile, Michigan a predominately white community and the Defendant condominium community mirrored the township. The couple have been residing the subject property for approximately 10 years and in 2011 he married an African-American woman, and immediately thereafter she was subjected to racially motivated threats by her neighbor almost daily for several months. Complaints to the Grosse Ile Police Department and the Royale Orleans Condominium went unanswered or were ignored. Over and above the indifference to the racially motivated death threats the condominium association levied fines against the couple on account of the alleged violations pertaining to alleged violations of the bylaws, although white residents at the property were not subjected to such fines. The couple hired attorney Jerard M. Scanland, a young upstart but very driven attorney, to represent them against the condo association. Attorney Jerard M. Scanland contacted the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit for assistance and then proceeded with court action where he was able to obtain a favorable result. Attorney Scanland has since become a Cooperating Attorney of the Fair Housing Center of Metropolitan Detroit.
